A worked example. A homeowner near Guelph checks their station and finds a frost-free date in the second week of May at a moderate risk level. They add ten days and set the start for the third week of May.

The first fall freeze at the same station lands in early October, so they set the stop for the last week of September and book the blowout for the first week of October. Two dates, one margin each, and the season is bounded.

Zones do not share a start date. A south-facing bed dries earlier and can start a week before a shaded one. Most apps let you stagger zone runtimes; use that instead of compressing everything into one date.

Keep the two dates in your phone as recurring reminders. The controller will not remind you, and a schedule that runs into November is a frozen pipe waiting to happen.

Set the override so that a forecast minimum near or below freezing suspends irrigation for the following morning. Do not simply pause for a day: cold air can sit for several nights, and the soil will still be wet from the last cycle.

After the cold passes, do not resume the full schedule immediately. Run one short cycle, check the beds, and let the sensor decide. Cold soil holds water longer than warm soil, so the controller's estimate will be too generous for a week or so.

This is the point where a controller earns its money. A fixed timer cannot respond to a one-night event, and hand-adjusting a schedule every time a front moves through is not realistic.

Sensors drift. A soil probe left in place over winter can read high all spring, so check any override against a hand sample before you trust it.

Sensor placement matters as much as the logic. A moisture probe in a dry, sunny bed will not represent a shaded bed on the same zone. Group zones by exposure before you trust a single reading.
