The expensive faults with robotic yard machines are rarely mechanical. They are decisions made in the first week that keep costing: a boundary drawn too tight, a base sited where water collects, a schedule that runs at night, or a machine crossing ground that should never carry a wheel. Each of these is cheap to avoid and awkward to undo.

Mark the route on a map at the same time, because the next owner or the next contractor will otherwise learn it by breaking it.

Mistake two: driving anything over a soil treatment area

Mistake three: running at night

Night operation is the default sales pitch and the source of two recurring complaints. Ground-dwelling wildlife is active after dark and cannot be seen by the machine or by you. Neighbors can hear a machine at 2am even when it is quiet by daylight standards. Daylight running with a raised deck height solves both at the cost of a little convenience.

Mistake four: cutting everything, all season

Uniform short grass across a whole property removes forage. EPA's summary of pollinator health concerns explains that the prevailing view among scientists at EPA, USDA, and internationally is that declining honey bee health comes from interacting stressors including pests and pathogens, poor nutrition from loss of foraging habitat, pesticide exposure, management practices, and low genetic diversity. Loss of forage is on that list. Leaving an unmown margin or a section of flowering ground is a free change, and it also cuts machine hours.

How often should blades be changed? Follow the manufacturer's interval, and change sooner if cut ends look torn rather than clean.

Can the machine cross a gravel path? Some can, many should not. Grit accelerates wear and gravel thrown by blades is a hazard.
