A buyer checklist for robotic yard equipment: measure slope and passages, mark buried systems, plan clippings and margins, then compare service and safety terms.
Most regret about robotic yard machines traces back to a measurement nobody took. Area is the number buyers quote and the least useful one. Slope, passage width, obstacle height, and surface transitions decide whether a machine works at all. This checklist puts the measurements first, then the site constraints, then the commercial terms.

- Measure the worst case, not the average: steepest slope, narrowest gap, softest ground.
- Mark everything buried before choosing a base location or a boundary route.
- Decide what happens to margins and flowering areas before the machine sets the default.
- Compare service terms and spare parts availability with the same care as cutting specifications.
Stage one: measure
- Total area, and each separate area if they are not connected by a mowable route.
- Steepest slope, measured rather than judged, including short banks.
- Narrowest passage between beds, walls, or trees.
- Height of every step, curb, and root crossing.
- Softest ground after rain, since that is where a machine bogs down.
- Distance from the proposed base to a suitable power point.
Stage two: mark what is buried and what is living
Irrigation valve boxes, utility covers, shallow cabling, and any onsite wastewater system need marking before a base position is chosen. So does anything you want to keep out of the cutting pattern.
That last point is worth planning rather than discovering. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service's Working Lands for Wildlife effort is built on the idea that productive land and habitat can share the same ground, with more than 8,400 producers enrolling and nearly 12 million acres of habitat conserved since 2010 while the land stayed in use. The scale is agricultural and the principle transfers to a garden: decide deliberately which parts stay uncut, rather than letting the default schedule decide for you.
Stage three: think about what leaves the yard
Returned clippings are usually a benefit, and they become a problem where they end up on paving that drains to the street. EPA's explanation of the types of nonpoint source pollution sets out how pollutants are picked up by rainfall and snowmelt moving over the ground and carried into surface water and groundwater, with urban runoff and lawn and garden sources among the categories described. Keep clippings on the grass and off the drive, and sweep rather than hose anything that escapes.
Stage four: commercial terms

Stage five: decide

Common questions
Does lawn area really not matter? It sets the size class. It just does not predict whether the machine can reach every part of your yard.
Wire or wireless boundary? Wire is proven and inflexible. Satellite and vision systems adapt more easily and depend on conditions such as tree cover. Ask what happens on a bad signal day.
Can one machine cover two separate lawns? Sometimes, with a transport mode or a second base. Confirm before assuming.
What about very small lawns? Below a certain size the machine costs more than the time it saves. A cordless push mower may simply be the better tool.
