Why prevention comes first

Why the professional answer is a combination
Serious practice does not pick one strategy; it sequences them. EPA and the Centers for Disease Control describe an integrated approach to mosquito control built on integrated pest management, a science-based approach focused on prevention, reduction, and eliminating the conditions that lead to infestations, relying heavily on resident education and on surveillance, meaning counting what is actually present, so the response matches the level of the problem. The agencies are explicit that a successful strategy can include pesticides, under appropriate conditions, and that the decision follows the surveillance rather than preceding it.
That is the model to copy. Measure, remove causes, then treat what remains, and automate only the part that is genuinely routine.
Applying it to a yard decision
Write the problem down in one sentence. Ask what physical condition creates it, and what you would need to observe to confirm that. Only then look at products. Most of the time the shopping list shortens, and occasionally it empties, which is the cheapest outcome available.
